Nature of the Crime

I have been shooting with Ricki Stern since “The Devil Came on Horseback” in 2005.. and as an additional treat, we worked together with Jesse Sweet, co-Director, who I had met while working on Parts Unknown. In Nature of the Crime, we followed three incarcerated men as they prepared for their upcoming parole interviews after decades in jail. These men reflected on their crimes, their rehabilitation, and the criteria for their potential release while we also explored the inner workings of parole boards. The result is a moral inquiry into a penal system that must serve justice to victims yet show humanity to rehabilitated prisoners eligible for release. DOCNYC Audience Award 2024.
